MEN'S FILE ISSUE 33
Itâs been a mixed year for Menâs File and all lovers of style as we lost one of our friends and colleagues who was with us from the start, not as an official part of the magazine, but as a supporter and adviser. Derek Harris was proprietor of Lewis Leathers for over 20 years, during which he influenced, and even partly instigated, many factions within the heritage style and revival scene with his policy of âreissuingâ the best of Lewis Leathers from the past 100 years â a unique approach that contradicts fashionâs obsession with the new and the disposable. Derekâs passing was unexpected and a real blow to us and itâs for this reason we dedicate this issue to him and his work while simultaneously supporting his wife and business partner Saaya Harris Nohara and looking towards a bright future for the brand, that Menâs File will continue to support and report on.
We live in an epoch in which self-congratulation is encouraged, but up until now itâs not something this publication has embraced, nonetheless, itâs fair to say that Menâs File is unusual in many aspects and in particular the age range of its readers and contributors. In our thirty third issue, we focus on extraordinary individuals like London-based fashion design students Si âKennyâ Chen and Rebeca Illie, whose ages, when combined, are less than half of that of your star guest Mike Minchinton, shot at the Minchinton Ranch by Monti Smith. No matter who you are, where you are from or what your age, if you contribute significantly to a style scene that comes within our remit, we might feature you on our pages. Although I would add that true âstylistsâ are rare birds indeed.
Elevating the recreation of historical events to unparalleled levels, Simon and Jamie Delaney and friends, who sometimes call themselves Spirit of Britain, are once again in action from their Norfolk workshop / HQ with an impressive collection of Triumphs â from untouched barn-finds to pristine restorations (all done in-house).
Finally, we want to thank all the contributors and advertisers that keep Menâs File alive, without you, we couldnât go on with our labour of love. Our original goal, of finding hidden or underground manifestations of male style that usually reference the mid-20th century and push back against the mainstream, in still ongoing. All the time we have your support, we will bring you new stories from around the globe.
The main feature, âLOOK GOOD IN LEATHER,â dives deep into the enduring appeal of the leather jacket. Through a series of intimate portraits, around 100 leather jacket devotees share their personal styles and stories. Whether youâre searching for your next jacket or refining how you wear one, this feature offers timeless inspiration and a full immersion into leather culture.
Also inside is an introduction to the long-awaited revival of GDC, led by Takashi Kumagai, marking its return after 17 years. For those drawn to engines and heritage, we report from the VINTAGE BIKE RUN held in Tsushima, featuring beautifully preserved machines and the enthusiasts who ride them.
